![]() SIMON/WIDE Simon/Wide is the name of this camera which takes a picture 2 1/4x7" on a normal roll of 120 films. it is not wide angle and it is panoramic. The camera presently has three interchangeable lenses. FIlm magazines are interchangeable and Simon also has a ground glass back for the camera that he hardly ever used. It is essentially a hand camera, shooting action up tp 1/500 th sec, electric flash, time exposures, multiple exposures, you just name it. Originally built to photograph transport air-craft, the camera has been used on 15 major motion pictures all over the world to produce special still photography. These include 3 James Bonds, Khartoum, Waterloo, Change of the Light Brigade, Devil's Brigade, Scalphunters, The Way West, Adventurer, etc. You've seen Simon/Wide used in annual reports, in Fortune, Life, Epoca, L'Europeo, as the uraparound cover on the LIFE'S GUIDE TO PARIS, the four covers of NYC community project book WHO NEEDS PARKS?, in the London Times, in The New York Times, The New York Herald Tribune (sob, sob,) The Suffork Sun (sob), the Washington Post, and more. If there is any-gimmick in the Simon/Wide result you might say that it is simply quality. Any 35mm. negative can be cropped and enlarged to the same 1:3 ratio, but when you start with a 7"-across color transparency with sharp detail you are a winner before the engraver gets it. When you have a choice as to which of these three starting points you likely will wish for the next larger transparency. The camera is more of an attitude about photography than a special device. This is no miracle idea. Panoramic cameras go back to the civil war times. Sometimes they were called banquet cameras, sometimes school graduation picture cameras This is a Scaled down version of whatever you call it, into a hand camera that uses modern lenses and emulsions. Audio/Visual folk sometimes lift five super-slide screens from a single Simon/Wide. ©1977 Simon Nathan Drawing: John West |
